Under the salmon regulations for 2007 many salmon fisheries are closed to angling as a conservation measure for the 2007 season. The Corrib system is open to angling but has a very small quota. The quota for a fishery is the number of fish that may be caught and killed. Currently the quota for the entire Corrib system is 375 salmon for the season although it is anticipated that this will increase to 788 from the 13th of May.
Out of this quota a total of only 26 spring salmon are available for anglers to keep. This quota has been divided amongst the different fisheries in the catchment and allocated on a monthly basis. The quota has been divided on the basis of the historical declared catch over the relevant parts of the fishery and the quota allocated on a proportional basis.
The spring quota for the Galway Fishery, Cong River, Clare River and Lough Corrib has now been caught. Fishing is therefore by catch-and-release only in all parts of the catchment, except the High Bank fishery in Galway, until the 12th of May. All salmon anglers must practice catch and release using single barbless hooks and in addition the use of worms as bait is prohibited.
There will be additional quota available for anglers from the 13th of May, however, as the revised regulations will now only come into effect on the 13th May no additional quota will be available before that date. New regulations also mean that all salmon killed after the 13th May must be tagged with a river-specific light brown tag available from the Western Regional Fisheries Board.
