Salmon quota for Corrib System April 2007

Under the new salmon regulations for 2007 many salmon fisheries are closed to angling as a conservation measure for the 2007 season. The Corrib system is open to angling but has a very small quota. The quota for a fishery is the number of fish that may be caught and killed. Currently the quota for the entire Corrib system is 375 salmon for the season although it is anticipated that this will increase to 788 from the end of the month of April.

Out of this quota a total of only 26 spring salmon are available for anglers to keep. This quota has been divided amongst the different fisheries in the catchment and allocated on a monthly basis. The quota has been divided on the basis of the historical recorded catch over the relevant parts of the fishery and the quota allocated on a proportional basis.

For the month of April the following quota for salmon is available in the Corrib system:

Section of Fishery Quota for April No. salmon killed to 16th April 2007
Galway Fishery & High Bank 12 2
Clare River & Lough Corrib 7 5
Cong 7 7
Owenriff River 0 0
Total: 26 14

Once the above quotas have been filled ( i.e. that number of salmon have been caught and killed) all salmon anglers must practice catch and release using single barbless hooks and in addition the use of worms as bait is prohibited.

As the Cong river in Cong has now reached its quota for the month of April this section of the fishery is now catch and release only and the killing of salmon in Cong for the remainder of the month of April is prohibited.

As the Clare river and Lough Corrib have only a total of two fish remaining in the quota, once these are caught which will probably be within the next few days, this section of the fishery will then become catch and release only for the remainder of the month of April.
