Lough Carra

This is a beautiful and very rich limestone lough of 4,000 acres in area. It is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of sixty feet. There is an excellent stock of wild brown trout that average one and a half pounds. The heaviest fish caught in recent years weighed eight and a quarter pounds and was taken on a dapped mayfly. The record for the lough is over 13 lb and was caught on a dapped mayfly by the late Paddy O'Malley, Linenhall St., Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Water in the lough is crystal clear and the angler very often can see the trout before it takes the fly. The lough until recently experienced big hatches of mayfly but for some unknown reason have declined.

Angling on Lough Carra is best from the end of April, few anglers bothering to fish until the beginning of the mayfly period which is normally about the 5th/7th May. July on the lough is generally more productive than neighbouring Corrib and Mask.

Angling Season:  March 1st to September 30th.
