The Corrib System
The Corrib System is one of the largest bodies of fresh water in Europe.
It consists of a chain of loughs draining from Lough Carra in the upper
reaches of the system, through Lough Mask to Lough Corrib, and from there
through the River Corrib or The Galway Fishery, into Galway Bay, with
many tributaries and smaller loughs flowing into the system.
The system is predominantly salmonid, but salmon do not run past Cong
into the Mask/Carra parts of the system. Most of the system have some
coarse fish species. However, the fishery is selectively managed as a
salmon and brown trout fishery which are subject to control by The Western
Regional Fisheries Board in order to protect and develop the salmonid
species.
