Western Regional Fisheries Board hosts Fishing Awareness Weekend this weekend.
Fishing Awareness Weekend brings you a series of events to get people, young and old, interested in fishing. All events are free, and open to children and adults who want to learn more about fishing. Staff from the Western Regional Fisheries Board will be on hand to demonstrate and assist, and the experience will be hands on. The list of events is below:
Friday August 28
A Talk on Traditional Poaching in Galway City and County, by Pat Gorman, Inspector with the Western Regional Fisheries Board. Galway Rowing Club, Woodquay, 10am.
This talk, given as part of National Heritage Week, will give an insight into traditional methods of poaching salmon and other illegal fishing activities in Galway over the last couple of centuries. The speaker, Pat Gorman, is an Inspector with the WRFB, with many years experience of fisheries protection work, and a vast knowledge of poaching methods and the poaching fraternity in Galway.
Saturday August 29
Flyfishing and Fly Casting Demonstration on the Mall River, Westport, 1-4pm
Staff from the fisheries board will be on hand to demonstrate flyfishing techniques, and coach beginners in casting a fly rod. Suitable for adults and children over 10 years old. Raingear advisable!
Saturday August 29
Coarse Fishing Coaching, Galway (in conjunction with Galway Coarse Angling Association)
This session has been postponed due to flooding at the planned venue. It will hopefully be rescheduled for later in September. Suitable for adults and children over 6 years old.
Sunday August 30
Fly Tying and Casting Demonstrations, Halla Einne, Carraroe 2pm – 6pm (in conjunction with Carraroe Angling Club)
Staff from the board and club members will be on hand to introduce people to flycasting and flytying, with opportunities to try both.
Monday August 31
Beach Angling Coaching, Lettergesh beach near Tully Cross, Connemara 5pm-8pm.
Staff from the board will be on hand to show the basics in beach angling for flatfish, including turbot and flounder. Bait and all equipment will be provided. Tackle kindly sponsored by Duffy’s Tackle, Galway. Suitable for adults and children over 8 years old. Raingear and Wellington boots advisable!
