Press Release 20 February 2009

First Salmon Landed at Galway Fishery

Earliest Salmon for Several Years

Third Year Running for Same Angler

The first salmon of the 2009 season on the Galway Fishery was landed this afternoon by local angler David Lenihan. The sparkling fresh fish, sprinkled with several sea lice, was caught on shrimp in the top pool beside the fishery office, and tipped 9lbs on the scale. In the last few years the first salmon has not been caught until much later in the season, even as late as April, but this year lower water levels and a mild spell heralded the early arrival. And for the third year running, the fish was landed by the same angler – Kerry native David Lenihan, who has been resident in Galway for many years. Dave is a regular at the Weir, and is usually among the top rods every season, so it was no surprise that he was successful again this year. The early arrival of the first fish hopefully bodes well for the coming season, and following last year’s bumper run of salmon in the Corrib, local anglers and regular visitors will no doubt be hoping for more of the same this year. Ends. Further Information: Fishery Manager Seamus Hartigan 091 562388 or email: shartgalfish@eircom.net
